Ray Fisher

7x Australian Motocross Champion

Ray Fisher’s love affair with motorcycles began as a 17-year-old apprentice motorcycle mechanic in Melbourne.

He quickly progressed to a famous BSA Gold Star machine and, in 1959, Fisher won the 500cc Australian Scrambles Championship, the forerunner of modern day motocross.

In 1960 he set sail on a one way passage to England, and stayed five years making adventurous road trips to race across Europe.

Fisher’s pioneering exploits included regular motocross and grass track races behind the Iron Curtain in East Germany and Czechoslovakia.

A career highlight in 1963 was victory in front 100,000 spectators against a world class field at the fast and famous Teterow International Grass Track in Germany.

This was road racing on grass with speeds hitting 160 kilometres per hour.

Returning home in 1965, Fisher added five more national titles to his collection in the Unlimited, 500cc, and 125cc Australian championships.

Fisher had sailed home on a ten pound passage with his Rickman Metisse bike – then the first of that famous brand in Australia – costing much more in freight.

Fisher’s trophy collection includes 12 Victorian state titles and three Grand National motocross wins.

He raced for 33 years, on 33 different bikes with his favoured race number 33.
