From all our motor sport achievers, perhaps the most widely known and revered driver was the late Peter Geoffrey Brock.

Once a bearded cigarette smoker but then clean shaven and diet conscious, Brocky wooed any and every one.

Despite impressive speed he was a very neat driver, easy on the machinery with few mistakew – until that fatal one in a rally at Gidgegannup in Western Australia in September 2006.

He was just 61. He would have been 70 last month.

For all that, he concentrated on Holdens with four doors, he also drove BMWs, Volvos, Porsches, Peugeots and. . . . Fords!

Similarly, despite winning nine Sandown and nine Bathurst enduros, along with three Australian Touring Car championships and the fiendishly long and hard Repco Reliability Trial in 1979, Brock also drove in France, Belgium, Macau and England.

Brocky had an easy way of dealing with people, for whom he never seemed to be in a hurry.

He loved a chat and people loved chatting with him. And collecting that neat and recognisable autograph.
