3x Australian Rally Champion
Early in the 1970s an unassuming public servant in Canberra started rallying in a Ford Cortina GT with his sublime skills ultimately making him one of Australia’s most acclaimed forest racers.
Talent-spotted by Colin Bond for the Ford team, Carr won the first of three national rally championships in an Escort BDA in 1978 against the might of the Nissan works team.
It was a golden era for rallying with Carr, on home turf, winning six consecutive Castrol International Rallies in Canberra including a memorable 1980 shoot-out against the legendary Flying Finn, Ari Vatanen.
Carr was also a six time winner of Victoria’s classic Alpine Rally but despite two impressive overseas outings, he focussed his career in Australia.
In 1978 Carr splashed his way through torrential rain to sixth place in class field in Scotland’s Burmah Rally.
A year later in the prestigious British RAC Rally, Carr was seeded 23rd at the start and finished tenth ahead of home heroes Colin McRae and Malcolm Wilson.
Carr was just 19 seconds behind Swedish legend Bjorn Waldegard who went on to win the world championship that year.
After winning two more Australia rally championships in 1987, in an Alfa Romeo GTV and ’89 in a Lancia, Carr drove for Proton in Malaysia.
