Aub Lawson

World speedway rider / 6x NSW Champion

Aub Lawson’s love affair with two wheels began as a 15-year old telegram messenger in 1929.

Seven years later he began a motorcycle speedway career that would make him a dirt track star in Australia and the UK.

On his first visit to England in 1939 Lawson was a sensation and qualified for the first of his ten speedway world finals at Wembley Stadium.

With the 1939 event cancelled because of war Lawson enlisted in the AIF and was a dispatch rider in Malaya before re-igniting his speedway career in 1947.

Lawson shuttled between successful stints in the British League – he won the 1951 London Riders Championship – and racing at home where he was a 9-time winner of the Australian Solo Championship.

Lawson also made 84 appearances for Australia in speedway test matches against England.

A career highlight was the 1958 World Speedway Final where he finished third joining world champions Barry Briggs and Ove Fundin on the podium.

Two years later at 47 Lawson switched his focus from racing to management as a trend-setting promoter, most notably at Perth’s famous Claremont Speedway.

Originally from country New South Wales, Lawson passed away in Perth in 1977 having made an impressive contribution to Australian speedway, on and off the track.
