Allan Moffat, OBE
Category: Motor Racing
Year: 2016
4x Australian Touring Car Champion/ 4x Bathurst 500-1000 winner
Born in Canada, Allan George Moffat came to Australia aged 17, when his father moved here with his work.
Moffat’s Australian debut was the first Sandown enduro, the 1964 Six Hour.
Three wheeling his Lotus Cortina was very Jim Clark-like and spectacular. He used it the Australian Touring Car Championship the next year but then gamely headed to the US to drive in the Trans-Am series.
Impressively he won the third round of that series, a 250 mile race in an under 2.0 litre Lotus Cortina by more than a lap over a Plymouth Barracuda.
All this was good for Australian racing. He was building experience and contacts as he shuffled between Australia and the US until 1969 when he settled here permanently.
The the arrival of his famous Coca-Cola Boss Mustang. With it he won two thirds of his race starts – 101 from 151 between 1969 and 1972.
An intense character, Moffat was one of our great touring car drivers in an era where the competition was fierce.
